Timeline | Layers Exposed
dddThe
graphic vernacular is based on the theme of layers—appropriated
from the archeological graphic representing the history of
the Emeryville Shellmound. The height of the layers took into
consideration the wide age and size demographic that would
view andvisit the site. Layers range in height from about
seven feet (for adults) tothree feet for children.
dddThe
timeline goes from right to left—from the shellmound's earliest
history to the present. Along the timeline, important dates
in Ohlone history are highlighted by small, colored spheres.
Correlating with the timeline on the wall behind, historical
Ohlone images are incorporated from the past to the present,
starting with stoic Ohlone fishermen and leading to a contemporary
Ohlone father with his two sons. The pilasters divide the
time periods.
ddd The collage is set
upon an early image of the Ohlone people, which stretches
the length of the timeline, representing the strength and
the lives of Ohlone ancestors who have always and will continue
to inform the lives of the Ohlone people, from the past to
the present. The wall is bracketed on the right with an introduction/history
of the Ohlone people and ends on the left with a series of
lighted display boxes displaying the work of local artists.
